Museums of Kiev

Essential parts of Kiev

gerb

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine,

one of the largest cities of Europe. The population of Kiev is about 4130 thousand people (about 2600 thousand of visitors). Together with suburbs Kiev forms agglomeration with the population of about 5 million people. Status of Kiev is regulated by the special Law, and it is separate territorial unit.
A city is the administrative, cultural, industrial, scientific and transport center of Ukraine. In 1918-1919 it is the capital of the People Republic of Ukraine, since 1934-1991 it is the capital of the Soviet Socialist republic of Ukraine, from August, 24 - capital of the separate state - Ukraine.
The city is situated on shores of the river Dnepr for 20 km.

Safety

they say that Ukrainians can spot a foreigner from a kilometer away, but you shouldn’t worry about this alone making you the target of criminal behavior. Kyiv is in fact a rather safe place. As in most cities, flashing large amounts of money could cause trouble. Wallets are known to be robed in public transport crowds. Being very drunk and/or loud on the street is always a good way to attract unwanted attention, sometimes from the police. By the way, it’s a good idea for foreigners to carry at least a copy of their passport and visa with them at all times.

Water

We do not recommend you to drink water from the tip Kyiv, it is neither tasty nor healthy and try to avoid it. Instead of use the city’s public wells, go to a better place and spend few hryvnias on bottled water from a shop.

Driving in Kiev

Most tourists from westerner countries will find driving along Khreschatyk and several other main thoroughfares relatively easy. But a few major problems with parking, heavy traffic and road condition are still waiting to be fixed. We recommend you not to drive in the City yourself, especially for a first time visits

Public transport

If you decide to visit places of interesting for you, we recommend taking subway (underground/metro). Subway (underground/metro) in Kiev is the most rapid and cheap type of transport which costs 50 kopecks for one journey. However, often quantity of free births in a public transport is limited, and a journey can be not very comfortable. We recommend you to use public transport only when it is necessary.

Time

Ukraine is situated in Time zone – GMT+2 For example: If in Kyiv it is 12 noon, then in London it is 10-00 am, in New York it is– 05-00 am, and it is 01-00 pm in Moscow

Climate

Climate in KIEV is moderately-continental Middle temperature January -5°С, absolute minimum -32°С Middle temperature July +19°С, absolute maximum +37°С In winter in town the snow is of middle thickness (20 cm), absolute a maximum is 440 cm The maximal amount of precipitations falls out in July, and minimum in October Approximately 60% of days in the year are cloudy and 40% are clear. Smoking. Toilets

You’re never too far away from a lit cigarette in Ukraine, and in some bars and clubs the term second-hand smoke just doesn’t seem strong enough. On the other hand, smokers will enjoy the ridiculously cheap selection of cigarettes which are sold by private sellers. Just recently it has been prohibited smoking in most public places and the in the workplace, save for specially designated places. It is the responsibility of each company to provide a designated place for all smoking patrons or personnel. These special places can not exceed 50% of the total allotted area of the business. Since this law is relatively new in Ukraine, not every business has begun to enforce it. Public restrooms are dirty and not very aromatic places in Kyiv. The best one can be found at the central train station and in underground shopping centers. The worse toilets are in the parks, beaches and some high-traffic McDonald’s places. Use of many public toilets cost 50 kopecks or so.

Tipping

Kyiv tipping culture has been developing slowly. There are no general rules of tipping, but in many restaurants tipping is about 10% of their bill. But waiters serving you will expect more from you as a foreigner! Some places include 10 per cent of tip into the bill, so it better to ask a staff member of the restaurant how to pay it.

Post

The main POST office works in the mode 7 days in a week, the representative offices of international commercial services work, as DHL and others. Our information manager will give you complete information and will help to take advantage of services.

Disabled travelers

Kyiv is not what you would call a disabled-friendly city. High curb drops and steep steps are the rule. The central train station does have lifts for the platforms, but the public transport system lacks even a hint of accessibility. The wheelchair symbol used in this guide means that the establishment in question specifically caters to disabled guests.

Communication

In Kyiv as well as there are a few leading operators of mobile communication in Ukraine: KYIVSTAR MTC It is yet all, for example BEELINE - offers accessible packages and communication with the Russian Federation For calls to Kiev, LIFE is a new operator offering economy variants for calls inside a country. Code: 00 international line, 38 is code of country, 044 is code of Kiev + telephone number For example: 00-380-44-4962051 (telephone of the WIZARD TRAVEL UKRAINE office)

Chernobyl

Everyone knows this ecological catastrophe. You should not worry. The level of radiation in Kiev is always normal, besides it has been constantly controlled by the state bodies.

Electricity

Ukraine supplies its residents and visitors alike with electrical current of 220 volts AC, 50Hz. All sockets require two round pins, but not always of the same size. Many thinner Russian sockets are being replaced by their European cousins. Those with Russian sockets can buy a cheap adapter for their European appliances. Adapters for more foreign electrical societies are not easy to find in Kyiv, so bring your own.

Floors

Ukrainians consider the floor on the ground to be the first floor and so one.

Food

Some years ago hungry tourists were limited to a handful of hotel restaurants with appalling service and tasteless food. It left to the past, visitors can now choose from a vast range of options of local and international cuisine that rivals many Western European cities. New establishments with new themes open regularly as the quality of food, service, and décor improve as well. The prices at some new, trendy restaurants in the centre are rising accordingly, but in the evening dining prices are less than you would expect to pay for the same level of service and quality at home. Equally appetizing moderately priced and budget options are widely available in all parts of the city. When the weather has warmed up sufficiently, many of the cafés and bars around the centre will set up outdoor seating. Absolutely, Kyiv opens meal experience starting with national and finished with fusion and thematic cuisine, offering friendly atmosphere, so much to say, - try it and you will enjoy.

Alcohol

Many tourists have enjoyed an icy-cold draft beer in a hot summer’s day in Kyiv simply because the soft drinks are often look warm - but probably very few have regretted it. Ukrainian beer (pivo) is quite tasty and extremely cheap to buy. Tipsiness may set in early, though, as its alcohol content is higher than Western brands. Those tourists who preferring foreign brands can find their favorites at finer shops and establishments. Ukraine also produces a wide selection of vodka, which flows freely at many parties and gatherings. But guests should refuse offers of homemade vodka (samohon). While good samohon can be better than some bootleg labels in shops, the overall odds are against you and your stomach. And whether it’s Ukrainian vodka or moonshine, be ready to offer a toast at some point. A modest ‘cheers’ (budmo) will do for a foreigner.
