UKRAINE
Ukraine is a republic in Eastern Europe which borders Russia to the east, Belarus to the north, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, Romania and Moldova to the southwest and the Black Sea to the south. It is the largest country wholly in Europe, with a population of about 46 million people. Ukraine is divided into 24 administrative regions, an Autonomous Republic of Crimea and 2 municipal cities: Kyiv and Sevastopol. Forests occupy about 19.8 million acres, and the most of them have been planted. Forests are mainly in the Carpathians, but there are woodlands in the steppes, ravines and gorges of the Dnepr Plateau. There are also nearly 3000 rivers that flow through Ukraine. The largest part of Ukraine is mainly flat. 95% of its territory is occupied by plains and only 5% by mountains. The Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains (the highest point is the Mountain Goverla, at 2061 meters) are situated near the western borders of the country, and the Crimean Mountains are situated in the extreme south of Ukraine.
Arriving to Ukraine
By bus: There are number of Ukrainian companies which offer international lines with European capitals and big cities. Ukraine has well developed system of interurban buses, which connect major cities of neighboring provinces.
By car: When you enter the country by car, foreigners are required to sign a document at the border swearing that they will bring the car out of the country before certain date. Foreign cars are allowed on Ukrainian soil for a maximum of two months. This document should be carried along with your driver’s license and your car’s registration papers at all time.
By plane: There are numerous airports in Ukraine operating either in an international or domestic capacity. Most international flights to Kyiv land at Boryspil International Airport, but there are several other international airports (Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odessa, Simferopol, Lvov, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhya) scattered throughout Ukraine. In fact, there are more than 180 paved airports in Ukraine. After arriving at one of Ukraine’s airports you can take a taxi or bus into the city.
By train: There are some international trains to from Berlin, Krakow, Sofia, Warsaw, and Prague. Ukraine has convenient railway network, which cover all the country and enable to get to almost every city. Working hours There are no definite working hours for shops. Usually shops are opened from 10 a.m. till 8 p.m. Supermarkets work round-the-clock. Banks and public offices are opened every day, except Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. Some banks are opened on Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Post office is opened from 9 a.m. till 7 p.m., except Sunday.
